Our story

A sketch gives an idea shape. We wanted a better way to give it texture.

A tool for texture

A ruler helps with a straight line. A compass helps with a circle. We wanted a tool that could do the same for textures and patterns.

We were already using rulers and templates for geometric patterns, and rubbing over pieces of raw material to bring texture onto paper. SketchTiles grew from bringing those approaches together.

Accurate, repeatable patterns. Still unmistakably a hand-drawn sketch.

From experiments to four tiles

We used 3D printing to explore textures and patterns at different scales and depths. A small group of designers tested the results.

Those experiments led to the four patterns at the heart of SketchTiles: Diagonal Lines, Crosshatch, Hexagonal Grid and Isometric Dot Grid. Each gives a different way to describe a surface on paper.
